Mahogany Bugleweed
Near black-burgundy leaves emerge in spring and gradually turn into a deep mahogany by mid- summer. Two-lipped bright blue flowers appear on leafy spikes rising above the foliage in spring. Semi evergreen, this ajuga spreads by underground stems to produce a dense matt-like groundcover and is a good substitute for mulch or turf. It will tolerate occasional foot traffic.
