Brilliant Red Chokeberry

More compact than the species, this ornamental North American native variety offers multi-seasonal interest in the garden. Clusters of white to light pink flowers appear in early spring. The flowers develop into large, glossy red berries in the fall that are tart but may be used for jams and jellies. They may persist into winter and provide food for birds and wildlife. Oval, dark green leaves turn a brilliant shade of red in the fall that has been compared to that of a burning bush. Tolerant of wet soils, it is a good choice for rain gardens and the edges of ponds. Also effective for erosion control due to its ability to spread by suckering.
